Full Time Small Business Owner: A Reflection

It's okay to take a step back. & it's okay to not do it all.

I can’t believe it’s been 6 full months of self employment.

Truth is, I loved my social work job. Stepping away from it was one of the hardest things I had to do.

But it was so necessary.

& actually, I think it was vital.

Because I was so incredibly burnt out (physically, mentally, emotionally) from trying to do it all. I’d come straight home from a draining day at working to dive right back into more work until 3AM. I wasn’t sleeping enough, I wasn’t eating enough, I wasn’t exercising enough, I wasn’t relaxing enough. My mental health was declining, my energy levels were at an all time low, I was irritable, stressed, you name it.

I wasn’t happy. & I was not okay.

I used to define my worth on my ability to “do it all”. I’ve always been a go getter who fills their schedule to the brim & scoffs at time spent that lacks productivity. I grew up always busy playing sports, going to school, and working simultaneously—I thought it was how I was supposed to live the rest of my life. It’s all I really knew.

& it wasn’t until the end of 2021 that I decided I needed to make a change. & if I didn’t take a step back and start prioritizing myself, my health, my needs, my happiness—things would get detrimental fast.

So I made the difficult decision to resign from my full time job in the social work field.

I never intended on going full time (anytime soon, that is) with my small business. To be completely honest, there’s still apart of me that feels unfulfilled—a void seemingly only satisfied by working in my field and serving others…

But at the same time, this is the happiest I’ve ever been in my nearly 25 years of life.

I’m finally able to take time to do things I love, spend more time with the people I love, and discover more things that I love.

At the end of the day, quality of life is so important. & you deserve to live your best life.

You’re incredibly worthy of that.

So just know, it’s okay to take a step back. To slow down. To have fun! To relax.

I promise you, you will thank yourself in the long run.
